Jessica Garrow for CU Regent
My name is Jessica Garrow, and I am running to represent Colorado’s 3rd congressional district on the CU Board of Regents to help ensure the opportunity for a higher education is attainable for all Coloradans. As a University of Colorado graduate, I know first-hand the opportunities I have been afforded because of my education. I want all Coloradans to have the same opportunities. Since I graduated from CU-Boulder, the cost of a CU degree has more than doubled, and this trend has me concerned for our young people, our families, and our success as a state.
Over the last 10-years, state funding for higher education has decreased by 53%. A decade ago state funding accounted for 15% of CU’s budget – today it’s about 5% of the budget. I am concerned that these cuts are disproportionately being made up at the expense of regular Colorado families. If we are going to compete in a global marketplace, we must be educating our citizens and we can’t price regular Coloradans out of higher education.
I believe we can solve these problems by working together and focusing on the importance of higher education. CU is the 4th largest employer in Colorado, so it’s success in a real way impacts the success of our state.
